With their heady fragrance and magnificently ruffled blooms, Peonies are perennial favorites in the plants & flowers section at Trader Joe’s. Customers and Crew clamor for their triumphant return every year, so we’re ecstatic when we finally get to shout it from the rooftops—the time for the new Peony crop is NOW!
Our Peonies arrive to stores with flowers that start in a tight golf ball shape. The exposed outer petals, also called the guard petals, have a slightly rough appearance that protect the fragile inner petals from the outside elements as they make their way to our flower buckets.
After a trim and a tall drink of water, the guard petals open to reveal splendid, vibrantly colored flowers in white, pink, purple or red hues. And while we simply call them Peonies, our growers actually provide us with a number of varieties from within the Peony family, including single, semi-double, double and Japanese (also known as anemone-form).
To maximize vase life (that’s florist-speak for the length of time the blooms last in a vase), give your Peony stems a fresh cut at a 45-degree angle and place into a clean, water-filled vase when you get them home. Display them in a cool location, out of direct sunlight, and change the water and re-cut the stems every other day.
You’ll find 5-stem bunches of Peonies at your neighborhood Trader Joe’s for $7.99, for a very, very, very(!) limited time.
